Providence Classical Christian Academy has developed the scope and sequence to be organized chronologically, but as a result of the flexibility used with the
University-Model Approach, students may enter some courses according to their ability as determined through admission testing. We will integrate History and English in content and include some emphasis on philosophy and the arts
to provide an interdisciplinary study of Western Civilization, but they will be taught separately. Staying true to the Classical Approach, we will include instruction and discussion seminars designed to develop each student’s thinking
through all aspects of rhetoric including writing, public speaking, listening, and reading. Providence will strive to emphasize the good and great works of Western Civilization.
Bible:
We seek to have students read the actual text for themselves rather
than only prescribed verses. Instructors will encourage students to understand
the verses in context, along with other good interpretation practices; let the
scriptures speak for themselves with clarifications and illustrations by the teacher.
We will show the richness and requirements of the Bible; develop a basic understanding
of the historical and geographical context of the Bible.
Grammar:
We seek to equip students with the skills necessary
for good writing, including content, form, and correctness. Instructors will
emphasize good writing by requiring students to write often and correctly in
each subject area; encourage clear thinking by requiring clear writing and speaking.
We will introduce many styles of writing using high quality literature and poetry
throughout the history of great literature.
Reading:
We seek to use phonics as the primary building blocks
for teaching students to read. Instructors will encourage students to read
correctly as soon as possible. We will introduce high quality children’s
literature as soon as possible, through our Literature program. There will
be careful monitor of each student’s abilities to ensure they are at their grade
appropriate level, are comprehending adequately, and are reading fluently,
both orally and silently. We will foster a life-long love of reading and high
quality literature, after being taught to recognize the characteristics of
such literature. Instructors will integrate wherever possible, other subjects
into reading, such as science and history.
Latin:
We seek to give an understanding of the roots of
English and other Romance languages through the study of Latin grammar and
vocabulary. Instructors will provide a good background in vocabulary, which
will be applicable to the arts and sciences. We will also provide training
in language structure, as well as cultivate the discipline and logical
thinking inherent in the study of Latin. Last, we will provide a better
understanding of ancient cultures, and their contributions to our modern world.
History and Geography:
We seek to teach a sound "grammar" of historical
and geographical facts in the early grades, as well as relate the physical
geography of a country to its history, culture, and primary industries.
Instructors will teach a broad understanding of history and geography,
specifically by deepening the level of exposure and research into various
topics. It is our goal for history and geography "come alive" through the
use of many forms of information and resources, such as biographies,
illustrations, maps, field trips, guest speakers, music, art, architecture,
and class projects. Last, instructors will teach history as an aspect of
every subject since each major branch of study has its own history and cast
of influential characters.
Science:
We seek to show that because God made the universe,
it has inherent order, which in turn makes it possible to hypothesize and
experiment. Instructors will teach the basic elements of Creation and Evolution
and that both systems are based on either sound or unsound faith. We will
also encourage natural curiosity, teaching students how to ask good questions
and design practical experiments to answer them. It is important that we
treat the study of science as a "means to an end," not an end in itself.
That is, curiosity, and the way of using science, as opposed to the study
of facts. Facts should be attained as the result of research and discovery
vs. Lecture. Use many forms of instruction to teach scientific concepts
and methods (a variety of experiments, demonstrations, research projects,
field trips, etc.)
Mathematics:
We seek to give students a working knowledge
of the grammar (definitions, names, and symbols) associated with mathematical
principles at each level. Instructors will teach a mastery of basic concepts
at an early age through the use of manipulatives, games, and other visual
aids. We will require memorization of basic mathematics facts at every level
once a conceptual understanding has been attained through the use of practical
problems, drill, and games. We will give students a thorough mastery of basic
mathematical functions and tables, emphasizing practical application of
mathematics through the frequent use of story problems. Last, we will teach
students to express problems in correct mathematical notation and teach the
application of mathematics in the sciences and other disciplines.
Art:
We seek to teach the fundamentals of drawing and the
use of a variety of art media. Instructors will encourage students to appreciate
and imitate the beauty of Creation in their own works. Also, we will gain a
thorough understanding of thse works of the masters and art works of different
periods of history.
Music:
We will train the students to sing knowledgeably,
joyfully, and skillfully to the Lord on a regular basis. Instructors will
also teach the fundamentals of vocal and instrumental music. Providence
will expose students to some of the history of musical expression through
guest speakers and musicians, as well as encourage students to select some
area of music, vocal or instrumental, to pursue on their own.
Physical Education:We seek to teach basic exercises and game skills.
Instructors will also encourage students, in cooperation with their families, to establish and maintain good health and nutritional habits. Also, we will
teach biblical patterns of behavior through activities requiring cooperation, working as a team, and good sportsmanship.
